Principal Engineer in Analogue Mixed-Signal Design for Precision Circuits

Microelectronic Circuits Centre Ireland (MCCI) is an EI / IDA technology centre hosted at the Tyndall National Institute. Its mission is to carry out industry-led world-class Analog, Mixed-Signal and RF integrated circuit research and to deliver trained people and IP to industry. MCCI is already collaborating with 35 companies and many of the staff eventually transfer into the thriving microelectronics industry in Ireland. MCCI targets real-life applications with its research and currently has projects in diverse topics such as DNA detection for food safety, next generation optical communications, bio-sensing, imaging for security applications and early cancer detection.

As microelectronics chips are manufactured in ever smaller geometries the performance of Analogue and Mixed-Signal circuits degrade while at the same time digital circuits becomes cheaper, smaller and lower power. Applications associated with the Internet of Things is placing multiple challenges on the Integrated Circuit Chips that are required to enable the next generation of IoT applications.

About your work

This role will ideally suit an established Researcher or Industry based CMOS Designer who wishes to transition into research leadership in Precision Analog Mixed Signal CMOS Circuits research area. The role is based in the Tyndall National Institute offices in Cork. The ideal candidate will be a key contributor to leading the development of our bio-sensing platform. The candidate will have a proven ability for working independently and managing small teams.

MCCI is opening up a Principal Engineer position in the area of Analogue Mixed-Signal Design for Precision Circuits: These will encompass a number of application areas including:

Analogue to Digital Converters
Sensor Interfaces
Medical Instrumentation

Key Responsibilities
Lead the research and development of the solution on an integrated circuit. This may include system level simulation, algorithm development, schematic design, layout and validation of manufactured silicon.
Lead and work on collaborative research projects with MCCI industry partners.
Carry out innovative research in Analogue Mixed-Signal IC Design, with a focus on taking advantage of deep-submicron CMOS technologies.
Develop and maintain existing research partnerships, while also building new relationships. Participate and lead research proposals to attract national, international and industry funding.
Perform modelling and analysis on the limitations of existing solutions.
Participate on research projects under the direction of a project team leader to design and develop new architectures and circuits in areas such as Data Converters, Precision Circuits and Sensor Interfaces.
Engage in the dissemination of the results of the research, as directed by and with the support of senior MCCI research staff.
Participate in education and public engagement activities, as required.
Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria
A PhD in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Physics, Science or equivalent experience.
Typically 10+ years relevant post graduate experience.
Track record in delivering world-leading development in Analogue Mixed-Signal Design.
Strong knowledge of CMOS circuits including: biomedical circuits, references, data converters and optical communication.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and to lead small teams.
Strong knowledge of CMOS CAD design tools.
Experience of bringing analogue IC design projects all the way through the design flow.
The successful candidate will be highly innovative with a strong desire to create world-beating integrated circuits research for real-life applications.

Track record of bringing projects all the way through the design flow.
Previous silicon Tape-out experience.
Desirable Criteria
Good mathematical ability and knowledge of statistics
Circuit knowledge on Analogue to Digital converters, references and biomedical circuits.
Experience in the area of Analog, Mixed-Signal or RF circuit design
Knowledge of mathematical modelling tools such as MATLAB.
Strong Publication track record.
Experience of silicon characterisation.
Experience of Analogue Layout.
Knowledge of verification methodologies.
Track record of being responsible for collaborative projects.
The appointment may be made on Grade 7 Admin B Scale €72,946 – €96,093 p.a. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with the public sector pay policy and years of experience. Multiple appointments may be made.
